Test Taking Tips

It's almost time for state testing. Our students here at RBES have been studying hard all year! It can be a stressful time of the year for students, teachers and parents. Our 3rd grade students will be taking SC Ready for the first time this year. Mrs. Tarcza discussed test taking tips in the 3rd grade April guidance lesson and she has been offering lunch workshops for 3rd grade students who want to learn more strategies to do their very best to best the test! There has been so much interest from 3rd graders that she had to add 5 extra workshops!

Mrs. Tarcza and Mrs. Jenkins have a few recommendations for students and families as we gear up to show what we know on the tests:

1) Get a good night's sleep (have your student head to bed 30 min early if possible).

2) Relax as a family the night before testing days. Talk with your child about how no homework during testing week doesn't mean it's time for over the top fun, but instead is so they can take time to relax and recharge before the next day's test. Encourage outdoor play, plan a game night or watch a favorite non-scary family movie.

3) Avoid overstimulating activities the day before testing and limit screen time at night so children get good rest.

4) Eat a healthy dinner and breakfast. Brains need fuel!

5) Turn a negative thought into a positive one and encourage your child to repeat it (I will do great on the test, I will do great on the test!)

6) If your child has test worries, remind them it is very normal. Help them practice deep breathing and calm down strategies at home.

7) Encourage your child to dress comfortably for testing days.

8) Talk about how if they don't know an answer to make a best guess and come back to check answers at the end.

9) The biggest mistake students make is rushing. Remind them to read slowly and carefully!

10) Plan something fun to look forward to when testing is complete!
